Chú Thượng (part 2),

Chú Thượng taught me how to drive a car. I was skeptical when accepting his offer because his right foot was made out of metal. He was kind of limbing while walking, and that was the same foot he would hit the brake while he was driving. Believe it or not, chu Thượng was the safest driver i had ever known. He never yelled or being loud when i made mistake while practicing driving with him while he was on the passenger side seating nervously. I passed the driving test only taking the test once after his training. He had taken me to the BankOfAmerica to open a new bank account (my first bank account in my life - “side note”: i did not ever had any bank account when we were living in VN). I shared a room with my cousin Quyền in his home until my mom and my younger sister arrived from VN in 1991. Again, he was OK for us to build a temporary room in his home garage to crash there for quite a few years until we got a home to move out. I even built an ugly gymnastic style single bar in his home back yard for working out, and he was ok with that. I did made a promise to buy him a traveling ticket for a vacation after i graduate from 4-year degree school and got a good job. I moved to Texas in 1993, finally got an engineering degree and got a good job, but never had a chance to fulfill my promise … i do not know how others knowing him, but personally to me - chu Thượng was very good to me and my family. He was a calm, collective and kind person. I never heard he raised his voice to each of my cousins. He speaks from his heart with a slow and moderate tone. He always helped others when being asked … i love him dearly… May his spirit join with Buddha realm of peace. May God bless his soul to heaven.

Chú Thượng,

I m not going to say “Sorry for your loss”, since many people have said that already. Instead i am going to share my memories about uncle Thuong or “chú Thượng”. That was how i called him when i saw him. My first memory of chu Thuong went all the way back to the time when the fall of the South of Republic of Viet Nam during the month of April 1975. My family left Nha Trang to Sai Gon a few week before the April 30th of 1975 to seek a chance to leave VN. We successfully arrived in the Capital and took refuge at my aunt home which was only a few houses away from chu Thuong home in Phú Nhuận district. I remembered my dad had asked for help from him to get some sort of paper work to be picked up by US military in Tân Sơn Nhất airport since he was either had some connection or working for US embassy at the time. It was too much to ask as for a big favor which only when i grew up realizing that. But chu Thuong did it and he had one of my older brother got on the same air craft together with him and his family. I think that was so cool and the best that he could do. And time went by until 1988 when i first came to US, and i got to see him again. This time i got to live in his home here in SanJose CA. Again, he is helping our family by taking me in and guided me for a new life in America. Chu Thuong was like my father - “side note” i lost my dad back in 1979 in VN when i was still a middle school kid. (To be continued)
