It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nga Tang. Nga was born on February 10, 1924 in Chaozhou, China. At the age of 26, she met and married Thanh Loung in Vietnam, who preceded her in death on January 1, 1986.
Nga is loved for being generous, kind, honest, and sincere. She would wave to everyone with a smile while taking her grandchildren and her dog, Kobe, on walks. She loved gifting red envelopes to her grandchildren whenever they would visit. She would not hesitate to tell you what she thinks, and also wanted what was best for her children and grandchildren. Her hands were rarely still; she loved to sew, rotate mala beads while watching teochew shows, and count money to put in red envelopes.
Nga lived the first 24 years of her life in China. She grew up in poverty during the rice famine. At that time, her diet consisted of sweet potatoes, and she would consider rice porridge to be a treat. Later in life, she didn’t like wasting food and had a real dislike of sweet potatoes. Due to the political situation in China, she decided to escape to Vietnam where she took up babysitting. There, she met her husband Thanh, who worked as a carpenter, while she took up sewing to support each other and their future family. Together they would have four daughters and two sons. In 1979, the political situation in Vietnam had worsened, so she and her husband escaped to Indonesia on a boat. While fleeing, they ran into pirates but luckily were able to make it to their destination safely.
On July 4th 1980, Nga and her husband arrived in Lacey, Washington in the United States with the help of their sponsors, the Murfins. In 1981, they moved to California, where she would live for the next 40 years. During that time, she would raise her grandchildren while living with her eldest son, Bien. She is survived by her 3 daughters, 2 sons, 16 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
