In Loving Memory of Evelyn—James Rogers

Evelyn has been my sister-in-law for over 35 years.  She brought warmth, joy and love into our lives. 

Throughout over three and a half decades, she is been not only been a loving sister motherly, despite me being 8 years her senior.  Always supportive and welcoming, making sure I was well fed, even when I was not hungry.  She also had her way of conveying when she was less than approving about something, often without words.

No matter where Lino and I were living, we knew that we could go home to Evelyn’s for love and comfort food.  We celebrated holidays, birthdays, graduations and simply extended family time—always at her home and around her table of food cooked with love—and we never left without containers.  

She was the Vicente family witness at our 2013 formal wedding in San Francisco—lovingly and dutifully giving Lino away.  

When we moved to Spain nearly 10 years ago, Evelyn’s home was our base and last stop as we were packing and planning to our adventure and was the first and last place to stay on all our subsequent arrivals and departures over the years.  

In 2021, I stayed in the Bay Area for 4 months, mostly at Evelyn’s home.  On the days I was sleeping elsewhere, she packaged home cooked food so I would not need to eat out all the time.  During that stretch, we celebrated William’s and my birthdays and, sadly, Philip’s passing.  Over those months, our connection grew and our goodbye was tearful.

I am thankful that we had the opportunity to spend time with Evelyn earlier this year.  I will cherish that memory and the many other moments together.  

I miss her more than words can express.  I am thankful for the gift of her presence in my life.
