In loving memory of our father, Alfred Alves Costa, who passed away recently on Sunday January 21, 2024, we grapple with a mix of emotions as we reflect on his life. Alfred, or Fred as many knew him, was a complex man who leaves behind a legacy that's deeply personal to each of us who knew him.
Alfred was born on October 26, 1928, in the quaint town of Cumberland, Rhode Island, as the sixth child among eight siblings born to immigrant parents. Described as the firecracker of the family, he inherited his father's spirit and became known for his lively nature and boundless energy. He was a man of contradictions, possessing qualities that made him both beloved and challenging.
We choose to remember Fred as a father and a man who possessed a multitude of talents. He had a remarkable affinity for music, effortlessly playing various instruments, and displayed exceptional athleticism, particularly in baseball, a sport he passionately pursued from his youth well into adulthood. His extraordinary memory coupled with his gift for storytelling captivated all who knew him, making him a cherished raconteur among friends and family.
A man ahead of his time, Fred drew strength from his life experiences, approaching each day with determination and vigor, always seeking his next adventure. Among his true passions were life itself. For over six decades, he immersed himself in the world of thoroughbreds, dedicating himself to their ownership, breeding, training, and racing.
Fred's unwavering passion and determination earned him the reputation of having a keen eye for horses. With numerous starts and many victories under his belt, he became renowned as the "Marathon Man," triumphing in Ferndale’s Memorial stake race several times.
As we bid farewell, be reminded of the complexity of human relationships. We are grateful for the moments of connection, love and the lessons learned along the way.
