Nancy Shaw was born on November 3, 1923 in Harrisburg, Illinois to her parents John Shaw and Marjory Ellen Robertson Shaw who immigrated from Larkhall, Scotland in 1921. Nancy was the 8th child born to her parents and was one of nine siblings. Nancy had seven brothers, William R., Robert, John, George W., Andrew, James, Jr. and one sister, Jean R., one brother passed as an infant. Nancy’s family moved to Plains, Pennsylvania in the late1920s where her father worked in the coal mines and her mother raised the family. Nancy grew up in Pennsylvania with her family until her father’s death from black lung disease about 1936. The family moved to Royal Oak, Detroit, Michigan where Nancy grew into a young woman and attended high school and a college of business. Nancy married Robert Marcell Lawrence in Detroit, Michigan in 1946 and had one son, Robert John who was born in 1947. Nancy worked as a medical assistant in Detroit, Michigan, raising her son with her husband until they separated in 1953. Nancy met Bill in Detroit, Michigan and in Indiana in 1955 married “Bill” William Arthur Pollard an engineer by profession from Liverpool, England. The family moved to San Diego, California, arriving on January 2, 1956. Bill was offered a position with Convair in San Diego where Nancy, Bill and Bob settled. On November 2, 1956, Nancy, Bill and son, Bob welcomed the premature arrival of Sue-Ellen. The family lived in San Diego until 1961, when Bill was offered a career with the Sunnyvale operation of Lockheed as an Engineering Supervisor. The family moved and settled in Santa Clara County living in Sunnyvale, Cupertino and San Jose. Nancy worked for Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara for fifteen years as the administrative secretary to the Hospital Administrator where she enjoyed working with the medical doctors and staff. Upon Bill’s retirement, Nancy and Bill moved to Sacramento until his death in 1988. Nancy returned to Santa Clara County and settled in Morgan Hill to reside near her son in 1988, where she remained until 2009, when she moved to Gilroy, where she remained until her passing on March 12, 2012.
Nancy will be greatly missed by her family and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Teresa Pollard of Morgan Hill, California, and her daughter and son-in-law, John and Sue-Ellen Cyr and her three beloved grandchildren, John William, Megan Elizabeth and Michael Robert of Santa Clara, California. Nancy was the last of her siblings and is survived by ten nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews residing in Michigan and Florida. Nancy enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including gardening, reading fiction, sailing on the San Joaquin Delta with the family, and playing bridge. Nancy was a lifetime member of her beloved Eastern Star which was a family tradition for several generations.
