Evelyn Lucinda Andrews Schumacher passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 in San Francisco at the age of 90 years. Born April 25, 1926 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Benedict Christian Andrews and Mary Jane Shepley Andrews, she and her parents moved to San Francisco early in her life where she attended Presentation High School and Lone Mountain Women's College. There, she began working closely with the Catholic nuns as a volunteer, an endeavor which would continue throughout her life.
She married Dr. Martin John Schumacher, a Beverly Hills psychiatrist. She and Dr. Schumacher raised their family in Brentwood Park, California where she continued as a volunteer and was elected President of the League for Crippled Children.
After her husband's death in 1969, she moved back to San Francisco, resuming her volunteer work with UCSF until 2014. In addition to volunteering at UCSF, she was a volunteer librarian for the Merchant Marines and had her office at Pier 1 ½ on the Embarcadero. She was also active in her Russian Hill group, organizing community events in the neighborhood where she resided for forty years.
Her friends and family all remember her as a vivacious, untiring, positive force in her community, and a wonderful friend, never giving up in her quest to bring about positive change and to help others. Rather than complaining about less-than-optimal circumstances she instead, went immediately to work to change them, and encouraged others to do the same. Her life-long selfless efforts and extremely kind demeanor will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Schumacher is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Martin John Schumacher and her son Jeffery Clement Schumacher, a U.S. Veteran. She is survived by her loving daughters Laura Mary Schumacher of Alicante, Spain and Suzanne Lynne Schumacher of Oakland, California. She was also the beloved sister of Abigail Taylor of Simi Valley, California, Mary Jane Wilton of Kerville, Texas and Cecilia Cravillion of Naples, Florida.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass, a Celebration of her Life at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 30, 2016 at Saint Dominic's Catholic Church, 2390 Bush Street at Steiner Street in San Francisco.
Interment will be private.
