Robert Edward Lee Austin II, our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on December 24th, 2023. Robert was born on February 5, 1935 in New York City to Robert and Affie Austin. The family later moved to Oregon and at age 18 Robert enlisted in the Army. He was in the 11th Airborne, where he quickly advanced and successfully completed Ranger Training in 1956. After completing his service in the Army, Robert attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR where he graduated with two Master’s degrees, one in Physics and the other in Mathematics. While attending college Robert met Susan Quisenberry, the two married and started a family.
In 1966 Robert was asked to serve his country again as a military advisor in the Vietnam War, where he served for two tours. After his service in Vietnam, Robert worked as a civilian for the US Navy, at Naval Oceans System Center in Point Loma, CA.
Robert enjoyed building things in his garage workshop and was a voracious reader. Robert was predeceased by his son, Bobby. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Susan, his children, Bronwyn, Stuart, and Chad. Robert also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ian, Ethan, Zoe, Charlie, Josiah, and Olivia. Robert’s memorial will be a private event for immediate family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization Robert supported.
