Modesta was born on November 4, 1928 to austere surroundings. With tenacious Catholic guidance from parents Pedro and Florentina Calub, Modesta had to grow fast to a young teenager/adult to help her family with 10 siblings (at that time) through World War II and Japanese Occupation. She came out of that period strong, able to graduate with an Education degree at the Christ the King College in La Union, Philippines. Her war experience and education made her unassailable and well capable of raising a family of 8 children with Melchor Raras, whom she married in November of 1951.
Her motherly influence with humility extended beyond her family to people (related and unrelated) who now endearingly call her Auntie Mods, Mama Mods, Grandma Mods. Her modesty made her be loved more than the giver of gifts.
Modesta was predeceased by her husband Melchor and her eldest daughter Victoria Gadiano, and is survived by her children Virgilio, Veronica Cruz, Verano, Velarde, Vanessa Corsino, Vivian Florez, Vernon, and her sons- and daughters-in-law Willie, Gloria, Gerry, Susan, Teresa, Joseph, Nestor, Joy, along with 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
