Melitona Capila Ignacio, 81, passed away peacefully at Scripps La Jolla Memorial Hospital in San Diego on March 17, 2020 from heart and kidney failure. Mely was born in Lucena City, Quezon Province, Philippines on March 9, 1939 to Inigo Capila and Eufracia Vallar Capila and is the youngest of six children.
Melitona, also known as Mely, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, tita, auntie, and friend. She is survived by her husband Nestorio, daughter Nemie, son-in-law Ferdie, son Nestor, Jr., daughter-in-law Molly, grandchildren Kevin, Justin, Janell, Kyle, Juliane, and Jasmine and her sister Belen Grasparil. She was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Geronimo, Tomas, Primo, and Gloria.
Mely graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and was an elementary school teacher and track & field and volleyball coach in the Philippines for 15 years. She moved to Guam in 1982 where she worked at a local physician’s clinic as a receptionist, billing clerk, and office manager. Mely loved to dance, travel, watch sports and teleserias on the Filipino Channel. She also loved playing slot machines at casinos and Candy Crush and WORD on her Ipad.
Mely was a very happy and social person who loved throwing parties and attending social gatherings and enjoyed the company of her family, relatives and friends. She was always the life of the party. She was a very religious person who never missed a Sunday mass and prayed her rosary everyday. Her favorite pastime was reading her bible. She was a very generous and kind person who made sure everyone was taken care of not just financially but emotionally and physically as well. She taught us the value of education and hard work and inspired others to achieve their dreams. She was a great example to everyone.
Thank you for the love, the care, the words of wisdom, and the happiness and joy you have given to each one of us. We love you with all our hearts and will miss you so much!
Due to the recent health updates concerning the COVID-19 pandemic her memorial mass originally scheduled on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church has been canceled. As of March 22, 2020, her viewing will still be held on Friday, March 27, 2020 from 4 -8 pm at El Camino Memorial Park. The mortuary is limiting the number of people at the viewing to10 people at a time so kindly let us know what time (in 30-minute increments – i.e., 4-4:30, 4:30-5, etc.) you plan on going to the viewing so we can stagger visitors. Please note that this can change any time between now and March 27 so we will continually update you on this. Her interment will be on Friday, April 3, 2020 at 12 pm at El Camino Memorial Park. Similar to the viewing, this is limited to just 10 people so it will be a private ceremony just for the immediate family.
We will have a memorial mass and celebration of life for her around her first death anniversary (tentatively scheduled on Saturday, April 10, 2020, a week after Easter Sunday) and we are hoping that everyone will make it then.
God bless everyone and please stay safe and healthy!
