Dear Jean-Marc and Nicolette,

Few days after moving to our new house on Calle de Cinco, I met your mother. You both walked by our house and I said Bonjour! Next thing I remember we were talking about how we traveled the world and shared our stories. Madeleine reminded me how lucky I was to live here in La Jolla. She immediately made us feel welcomed in the neighborhood. The last time we were at her house was for Jude's birthday. She looked happy surrounded by family and friends and could still hold her flute of Champagne like the real French lady she was. Her witty retort combined with a certain "Je ne sais quoi" made her the very special Queen she was. She will be missed.

Très cher Jean-Marc, très chère Nicolette,
C'est avec une profonde tristesse que j'ai appris le départ de Madeleine. Je n'oublierai jamais les deux merveilleuses semaines passées à San Diego avec vous. Madeleine et vous m'avez accueillie avec toute la douce chaleur de votre belle famille. Madeleine était une femme magnifique, comme on en croise rarement dans une vie. Forte, charismatique, adorable. Elle m'impressionnait beaucoup mais elle avait le talent de mettre tout le monde à l'aise, l'intelligence des relations, un grand talent humain. Le plus beau de tous les talents. Elle avait un humour désarmant, une énergie incroyable, une curiosité et un appétit de vivre puissants. Tout le monde tombait amoureux de Madeleine. J'ai mille souvenirs et plus avec elle, avec vous, encore très vivants en moi. Mille moments simples et précieux que je continue de chérir. Et je pensais que je reviendrais vous voir à La Jolla, que l'on aurait encore le temps de poursuivre ce séjour. Madeleine sera toujours dans mon coeur, lumineuse et inspirante.
Aujourd'hui, je partage votre chagrin et envoie mes meilleures pensées, avec fraternité et amour, à vous et à votre famille.

My deepest condolences, so sad.
I remember the time we spent in Munch with Madeleine.
We immediately felt so connected and we were talking like long time friends.
It was as if I had met my teenage girl friend and she was giving me advices and telling me about her life.
It felt like we were both two girls chatting and having fun. Such an amazing woman in every way.
I hope she was calm and happy when she left. She was so sweet, so tender, so smart, so funny
and had a kind of magnetic energy around her. And she loved you so much.

My condoleances with the death of your dear sister, mother and grandmother Madeleine. Although she will be terribly missed, we wish her to be in peace now. I remember Madeleine as being 150% French (in her words), glamourous, original and independent, fun, optimistic,  extremely good cook and hostess, and a good and loyal friend.With Madeleine’s passing, I hope you don’t mind my reminiscing a little how I met and experienced my friendship with her ever since 1965. Shorty after I arrived in Washington and set up house with Elsa in the Savoy in DC, Madeleine invited me along with Elsa & Maurice for dinner at Andrews A/F base. In Holland we were only used to being invited for coffee, so this was a revelation: an American Martini cocktail, appetizers, Harold asking if I wanted my steak “tiddy pink”, all the subsequent courses the French way, and then the Baked flaming Alaska cake. Plus Eau de Vie and eh…glou…et…glou… happy..! Harold also gave my parents an impressive tour of Air Force One when they came to visit.  Madeleine, Harold (bringing his TV along) and Jean-Marc & Nicolette would visit at the Savoy occasionally (and had one of our atrocious dinners) but with lots of singing and fun. When Harold was in Viet-Nam we would record messages and music to send to him for comfort, especially Amazing Grace which he loved.  We also went skiing altogether with Mau/Elsa, Carlos, with the Club Med in the French Alps.  After their retirement to San Diego we kept in touch, I visited Maddie in Paris in 1997 and  also in La Jolla. From there Madeleine and I went on a cruise to Australia and the Pacific Islands. She was already suffering from back pain at that time and she has had to endure many physical ailments since then. Thank God she is out of her suffering now.  I am grateful for having known Madeleine, will miss her,her love of life and friendship. I am also grateful for having met the whole Pairel family in France, and including me (and Carlos). With loving memory of Nona.. The world lost truly one of a kind person and personality. Thanks for all the good laughters and celebrations of special times. I will treasure your recipe of the best creme caramel ever tasted… you will be missed.
