1926-2024
The youngest of three children, Louis was born in New Bedford, MA to Virginia Nunes Pombo and Marcial Gomes, who both immigrated from the Island of Madeira. In 1930, his mother moved with her children to California in the midst of the depression, settling in Sacramento and later in Oakland, CA.
He attended Castlemount High school where he enjoyed sports and was quarterback of the football team. He also loved music, playing the guitar, clarinet and drums. School was cut short by World War II when he enlisted in the Navy, serving on the USS Sheridan in the Asiatic Pacific.
He married the love of his life,Theresa Carreira in 1946. They moved to San Diego in 1947, settling in Point Loma, where they remained for the rest of their lives. They raised four children and were part of the vibrant Portuguese community. Louis worked as a commercial fisherman for the tuna industry for over 30 years, obtaining his navigation license along the way.
Not long after he retired, and his wife passed away, he joined a motorcycle club and toured the United States. He sang in the choir at St. Agnes church, and, not one to sit around, worked as custodian at the church for a few years where he made many friends.
Preceded in death by his wife Theresa, their son Louis Jr. and his sisters Mary and Laura. Survived by his children: Doreen (Bill) Miller, Sandra Magellan and Janet (Sam) Escamilla; 10 grandchildren;14 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A rosary and mass will be held at St. Agnes Church in Point Loma on March 13th, beginning at 9:30a.m.
Interment at Miramar National Cemetery in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity on Louis behalf.
