Kelly Lee McComb, 58, passed away on May 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he recently moved. He was battling metastatic renal cancer at the time and he had just started his first immunotherapy only less than two weeks before and so his death was unexpected to family and friends.
Kelly was born on February 19, 1963 in The Dalles, Oregon, but grew up in Penrose, a small rural town in Colorado. As a young boy, he was involved in the 4-H club and raised many different animals; a country life. Growing up the youngest of four boys Kelly learned to be tough, quick and resourceful to outdo and outrun his older brothers. He joined the US Navy as a Hull Technician after high school in 1981 and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was honorably discharged in 1986 and landed his first job out of service as a firefighter with the Federal Fire Department in Oahu, Hawaii. He was stationed at Station 15 in Schofield Barracks Army and then Station 14 in Wheeler Air Force Base. He later transferred to San Diego in 1988 and was assigned to fire stations on various military bases. Kelly retired as a Captain in August 2016 from the Federal Fire Department after 30 years of service. His last duty station was at Station 111 in Point Loma.
Kelly loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, RVing and taking his Harley for a spin. Living in Hawaii he enjoyed the beach. He was a strong swimmer and liked body surfing and boogie boarding. Throughout his life, he held many interest from welding to deep sea diving to gardening to American history to tae kwon-do where he attained his black belt. He was a do-it-yourself kinda guy. He was a perfectionist, got things done and worked hard and played hard.
Kelly took care of his family and extended family. He was generous and would try to help in any way he could. He would not hesitate to fly or drive out if necessary to help out.
Kelly was a great and loving daddy to his two children. He was a hands-on daddy from day one. When they were babies, he always helped in their care which included bottle feeding, bathing and rocking them to sleep. As they became older, he played chase, hide and-seek, played board games and took them to the park or the zoo. Later in their teens and adulthood, he took them on memorable vacations to Hawaii, his favorite destination. He had a big heart for his children and could never say no to them. He worried about them a lot and was protective of them. They were his stability and the loves of his life.
Kelly’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by his children, Kevin and Nichol (Nikki) McComb, whom he shared with former spouse, Melissa (Esguerra) McComb; his brothers, Wayne McComb and his wife, Doris, of Kearney, AZ and Michael McComb and his wife, Stephanie, of Lockhart, TX; his sister-in-law, Nancy McComb, and his cousins and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Eileen (Fowler) McComb; his stepmother, Marilyn (Bishop) McComb; and his brother, Bruce McComb.
Kelly loved to have a good time and there is only one way he knew how to celebrate. Everyone who remembers him is asked to celebrate Kelly’s life in raising a glass of their favorite drink in his honor. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him well.
A private funeral service for the family and close friends is scheduled on June 22 at Rose Creek Cottage. Kelly’s brother, Pastor Michael McComb will officiate. All others are welcome to attend the burial on June 22 at 2:30 pm at the Miramar National Cemetery.
