Her daughter, Amanda was by her side.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 2pm on Friday, March 11th at the Pacific Beach Chapel on Cass Street. Following the ceremony, there will be a Sunset Cocktail Reception at JRND Restaurant at Tower 23.
Judi was born on August 28th, 1947 in Darby, Pennsylvania to Frank and Laurel Tyson. She shared her childhood with her older siblings, Joe and Laurel “Lolly” and her younger sister, Leslie. Some of Judi’s fondest childhood memories were of playing hopscotch and card games with them, along with 4th of July festivities. Despite their physical distance, Lolly and Judi remained very close for their entire lives, and Lolly was asked to be Amanda’s Godmother.
Judi was loved by all who knew her. She had a warm way of making a connection with people. She was smiley and upbeat, unless you had differing political opinions as her. She enjoyed getting together with friends over a glass of chardonnay, or three. She loved a good time and deep conversations, especially with someone who was open minded and connected.
Judi was quite an accomplished woman, and her career was varied. As a child, she wanted to become a nun, what a different story this would be! Rather than going into the nunnery, Judi became an elementary school teacher, and then shortly after, began building her career in sales and marketing at a small advertising agency in Philadelphia. She went on to become the first female radio advertising salespeople and also opened her own advertising agency with two other women.
Judi longed to live in a warm climate and years of Philadelphia winters started to take their toll on her, she decided to move to the Florida Keys where she attended Florida International University and received her Bachelors in Philosophy, while working full time. After a few years, a marriage, and the birth of Amanda, the family moved to Atlanta, where Judi continued working in radio sales. She was awarded the most successful person in National Radio Sales in Atlanta and went on to become a leader in the Atlanta Broadcast Advertising Club. Judi was then recruited by CBS Television and eventually became their National Sales Manager. From there transferred to MMT, where she met one of her best friends’, Aleyne Larner.
Another shift in Judi’s career and life took place in 1991, when she moved across the country and tried her hand at owning a bookstore in La Jolla, Ca. What a different world that was! She quickly realized that wasn’t the route she wanted to take and explored various jobs in San Diego before landing at The Titan Corporation. Judi decided to go back to school in her 50’s and got her master’s in organizational management, a perfect degree for a Virgo like her!
Prior to her retirement, she was the Facilities Manager for Titan/L-3, which she enjoyed and learned a lot from, but she was definitely happy to retire!
All work aside, Judi was quite a creative and talented individual, she was an artist, and after her retirement, continued to take art classes. She was spiritual and philosophical. Judi loved watching movies, especially the older Ted Turner Classics. She filled her (pre-Covid) retirement days volunteering at the USO and the Humane Society, due to her love for animals. Judi enjoyed swimming, walking & taking dance classes. Judi was a poet, an actress (for a brief period), and an accomplished cook.
Judi was a wonderful, caring and giving mother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her only daughter, Amanda Pillow and her siblings, Laurel Weeney, Joe Weeney, Leslie Kingsbury, and her many loving friends.
