Frank Tarantino passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, February 12, 2011. He retired in 1980 from commercial tuna fishing after 55 years in the industry. He worked for Mayer Reprographics Company and was an active member of clubs and associations including The American Tuna Boat Association, the Fish Monger Club, Elks Club, and the Italian Catholic Federation.
Frank was born in Milwaukee, WI and came to San Diego in 1936 at the age of 12. He married his wife Josephine on October 22, 1949. He enjoyed family get-togethers, vacations and spending time with friends at various social gatherings and events. We will remember his energy, fishing stories, generosity, mentorship, work ethic, and love of life.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Josephine (Busalacchi) Tarantino, children Frank (Loren), Mary Lynn (Kevin), Philip (Marian), grandsons Joey (V.V.), Daniel, Bryan and Matthew. He is also survived by brother Steve Tarantino and sister Gatana (Stan) Madruga along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Salvatore (Frank) and Mary Camarda Tarantino, sisters Josephine Casciola, Florence Conway, Vivian Casciola and brothers Peter and Tony Tarantino.
Viewing will be held at Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary, 3655 5th Ave, 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 18, 2011. Recitation of Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church on State and Date Streets. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Mausoleum on Hilltop Drive in San Diego.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Rosary Church Building Fund or the Carmelite Monastery on 5158 Hawley Blvd., San Diego 92116.
