Survived by sister Rose Perkins, children Jeanine Oien, Jeff & Lisa Oien, and Elissa Rush; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Jack’s dream was to become a pastor, and God had the road planned out for him.
In 1966, Jack & wife Joyce were called to serve as missionaries with Wycliffe Bible Translators in the Amazon jungle of Peru. He ran the mission Print Shop for over a decade. After returning to the United States, Jack completed his Master’s degree and became Pastor of Chula Vista Missionary Church. One of the things he enjoyed the most was hosting military personnel at “Harbor Home”, a small bunk house for servicemen.
Pastor Jack, as he was known to many, loved working with his hands, tinkering, building things, and collecting new family members. He was driven by his desire to serve the Lord and his heart was always with the men at Church on the Rock (at Donovan State Correctional & Rehabilitation Facility). Because of this, he founded “Pastors to Prisoners” in Nov. 1995, a non-profit supporting ministers who feel the call to work with the incarcerated as full-time volunteers under the direction of prison chaplains in prison facilities. (pastorstoprisoners.org). Joan Lemke Oien, his wife of 18 years was very supportive of Jack during the final years of his ministry.
In lieu of flowers, Jack made the request that donations be sent to Pastors to Prisoners.
A memorial service for John will be held Friday, August 11, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.sorrentovalleychapel.com for the Oien family.
