Janet Schwend

Edna Janet Hines Schwend was born July 10, 1935, in Snyder, OK and died in San Diego, CA June 8, 2023, at age 87. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick David Schwend; her parents Burdette Hines and Edna Hines; and her brother Bruce Hines.

She came to San Diego in 1940 with her family. She spent her childhood in Linda Vista and went to Kearney High School, where she met her husband Fred and was a drum majorette. She graduated from Kearney High in 1953. Janet studied at San Diego State University, where she was part of the first graduating class from the SDSU Nursing School in 1957.

Through the 1960s, Janet was a consummate stay home mom, raising their four boys until they were off to school. In 1970, she joined the workforce, first as a teacher and then as the director of Northminster Preschool. Janet always had a smile and hug for every child that came through the preschool doors. She retired in 1996 after twenty-six years of serving the community.

Janet is survived by her loving family; her sons and their wives: David, Rob and Debra, Ray and Virginia, Kurt and Deborah; grandchildren: Timothy and his wife Olivia, James, Kevin, Alexander, Kaitlyn, and William; her brother Wayne Hines and his daughter Senia Hines Emerson and granddaughter Savannah.

Janet was greatly loved and will be missed by her many friends and family.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 10:00 am at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 4324 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92117.

The family requests no flowers. If desired, donations may be made to the San Diego Zoological Society.

Inurnment will be private.
