Ines Ley Lowe, 82, passed away in her San Diego home on January 19. She passed peacefully in her sleep after a four-year battle with lung cancer. Ines was born in Zhongshan, China to Hing On and Siu Chor Lee. She grew up with five sisters and three brothers. During the communist revolution, she, her father and her eldest brother fled to Ensenada, Mexico where they ran a grocery store. She learned both Spanish and English informally through conversation. Eventually, she met Jonson Lowe and immigrated to the United States, where they married in 1963. They went on to have three children, Timothy, Deborah and Christopher. They briefly owned a small grocery store called Stanley’s Market in Lemon Grove but soon realized they could not compete with the large chain markets. Ines went on to study cosmetology and passed her exams to receive her license. After working for several places, she opened her own beauty shop - Ines Lowe’s Beauty Salon. She stayed there for over thirty years and made many friends over the years. Ines loved gardening, so much of her free time was spent in the back yard. Her favorites included orchids, epiphyllums and fuscias but you could find many unusual plants and trees in her garden. She also planted flowers that attracted butterflies as she loved to see them flying around. She worked hard to transform a grass lot into a tropical oasis. Combined with the koi pond and birds that Jonson kept, it provided an idyllic setting to entertain family and friends. Ines was tireless in her pursuits. She was most proud that an immigrant who only spoke a smattering of English could study hard and earn a cosmetology license. Although she gave much credit to all the kind people who helped her, that experience taught her anything was possible with the right amount of determination and hard work. She always tried to teach that lesson of hope to those who would listen. In their post retirement years, Jonson and Ines loved traveling, visiting relatives, going to casinos and doting on their grandchildren. They were always happy to meet new people and make new friends. They shared a happy and rich life for over fifty years together before Jonson passed in November of 2018. Ines is reunited with her parents, Hing On and Siu Chor, her husband Jonson, and her brothers Bo Hing, Bo Bun and Bo Tim. She is survived by her sisters, Wai Yin, Kam Yin, Kwai Yin and How Yin, her children, Timothy, Deborah and Christopher, grandchildren Alexander and Jason, as well as many nephews, nieces, in-laws and friends.
