Calvin Donald Cox, better known as Don or “Big D” died on the morning of June 11, 2014. Don is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Cox, daughters Joelle Cox and Jeralyn Ehlers, son in law Eric Ehlers, grandchildren Emily and Jake Ehlers, his three brothers Fred (Kathy)Cox , Dennis (Brenda) Cox, and George (Harmony) Cox.
Don was born on May 22, 1945 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He graduated from Rustberg High School, in Lynchburg, Virginia. Don was actively involved in the Boy Scouts and achieved the status of an Eagle Scout.
Don attended Virginia Tech before joining the Navy in 1968. Don served on the USS Ranger as aviation technician. Don served in the Navy for eight years and had three tours of Vietnam.
The navy brought Don to San Diego, and he never left. He finished his degree at San Diego State and received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. Although he graduated an Aztec, he remained a loyal Virginia Tech Hokie until the end.
Don met and married Mary Anne Vinyard in 1972 and they settled in Point Loma and raised two daughters, Joelle and Jeralyn. Don was always self-employed and for the last twenty years he owned and operated Alexander’s Upholstery.
Don was an active man whose hobbies included cooking, travel, deep sea fishing, golfing, playing cards, and horseshoes, softball (he was the oldest and longest consecutive pitcher in his league).
Don was an active member of OMBAC and ran the Cantina at OTL for nearly eighteen years.
