Denis Hin-Chung Chan was born on October 30, 1932, to Peter and Clara Chan, in Swatow, Guangdong, China. Denis spent most of his early life in Swatow and Shanghai. He attended Shanxi Medical University in 1952, and eventually became the chief surgeon at the university hospital. In 1962, he moved to Hong Kong to reunite with his parents and siblings. He held a teaching position at the University of Hong Kong in the Anatomy Department for 9 years. In October 1971, he and his family immigrated to the United States and settled in San Diego, CA.
In San Diego, Denis did medical research and eventually opened an acupuncture clinic in Del Mar, CA. Being a surgeon, he was very skilled and talented with his hands. He enjoyed building model planes and boats, making crafts, and working on cars. Denis was also an avid fisherman and loved being out on the ocean. Puzzles were a favorite family pastime. He and his siblings would work on puzzles together all day and into the late hours of the night. Denis especially loved to cook, particularly for family and friends. He prepared many delicious Cantonese, Shanghainese, and Swatownese dishes. If he knew you were coming to visit, he would cook your favorite dish.
Denis went peacefully to be with our glorious Lord and Saviour on Friday, February 10, 2023, at the age of 90. Denis is survived by his wife, Joan Hui, his children, Ada and Brian, and three grandchildren; his siblings Anna Lee, Eddie Chan, and Fred Chan; as well as nieces, nephews, and grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and older siblings, Bernard Chen and Clara Tsoi.
The family requests that the memorial be held privately for family members only and that all gifts be donated to Chinese Bible Church of San Diego (www.cbcsd.com) in memory of Denis Chan.
