David Horgan Twomey, our much-loved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away at home on August 28, 2023. He was 90 years young. David was the epitome of a lifelong learner. He was an avid reader, crossword puzzler, and Scrabble player. He remembered and could discuss everything he read, whether it be history, current events, football, or San Diego politics. David was also an independent thinker. He was always open to hearing new ideas and trying new things. We are especially proud of him for that. Ever the optimist, David even bought himself a Peloton to celebrate his 90th birthday.
David was born on December 4, 1932 in Boston, MA. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA and, with assistance from the GI Bill, Merrimack College. David moved to San Diego in 1961 and spent the next 34 years working as a civil engineer for the City of San Diego, retiring as the Assistant Director of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation. He was extremely proud to have been a part of San Diego’s transformation from a sleepy beach town into one of the country’s most beautiful cities.
During his enviably long retirement, David committed himself to staying engaged with his family and community. David loved his grandchildren and celebrated their every success. Over the years, he was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Starlight Opera, and most recently, he served as Vice President of Programs for the City of San Diego Retired Employees Association.
David is survived by his daughters Lisa Friedman (Brett), Maria Iredale (Bruce), son David Patrick Twomey, grandchildren Benjamin Friedman, Claire Friedman, Aaron Friedman, Candice Dunmire (Mike), and Bryce Holt. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Hickey of Salem NH and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Bernard Twomey and Jerome Twomey.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in David’s name to Central Catholic High School, Lawrence MA, www.centralcatholic.net , so that others may have access to the same opportunities he had.
