David Escaño Gomez was born to Miguel Aure Gomez and Maria La Paz Rodriguez Escaño in Mendez, Cavite, Philippines. La Paz raised him and his older brother, the late Leandro “Kuya Dado,” as a single mom since Miguel passed away when David was only 3 years old. David graduated from Tagaytay-Mendez Academy and was the commanding officer of M Company in ROTC.
While studying electrical engineering at Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila, David met the love of his life, the late Maria Josefina “Pening” Llamado Beltran, when she was 17 years old and he was 19. They were blessed with 8 children, 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren: Yumi (Marlon) Battad of Orlando, FL with children the late Karen (Liz) Kerr, Connie (Jeffrey) Wrighthouse and AJ Battad; Liz (Bernie) Rodriguez of Murrieta, CA with children Sarena (grandchildren Janella, Nadine and Royce) Ricci and Darrel Castillo; Mike (Maricel) of Santee, CA with children Mareece and Ashley; Paz (John Gaillard) of Carlsbad, CA with twins Eric and Gina Gaillard; David (Jody) of Skokie, IL with children Trey and Kathryn; Mark of Taizhou, China; April (Albert) Labrador of San Diego, CA with children Alyssa, Adam and Ava Labrador; and Riza (Ogie) Eusebio of San Diego, CA with children Chloe and Ian Eusebio.
David proudly served in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years, retiring as an Electrician’s Mate Chief Petty Officer in 1974. He continued his career as an electrician and equipment repairman with the San Diego Unified School District for 19 years.
In his retirement, David enjoyed reading newspapers and books, especially on financial investments, martial arts and wellness. He enjoyed mentoring his grandchildren and encouraging them to excel.
When Pening passed away, he found love again with Nenita Endozo Rocillo. They married in 2012 and lived in Santee, CA. With Nenita, David had 5 stepchildren, 9 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren: Dey (Bobby) Mercado of Imus, Cavite with sons Kevin and Christen; Malou (Julian) Berueco of Saipan with children Vida Amor (Mark and granddaughter Victory) Echaluse, Julianson (Arnnie) and Jolo (Shanell); Tony (Maruja) Hernandez of Mendez, Cavite with daughters Tonette (granddaughter Avery) and Mayet (Jhon Carlo and grandchildren Jillian and Carlos Antonio) Juno; Maricel (Mike) Gomez of Santee, CA with children Mareece and Ashley; and Johanna (late Robert) Wilson of Santee, CA with children Yzabele and Denzel Sosing.
David passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and several of his children and grandchildren.
