Ching Huan Yang was born in Hunan province in China. He grew up with three sisters. As a teen, he loved spending his time playing soccer. As he got older, he attended the Yale University in China and later came to pursue his graduate studies at Lehigh University where he earned a PhD. This sparked his passion for math and science and a career in mechanical engineering. After graduation, he worked for Anaconda engineering in New York City, moved to San Diego with Convair in 1955, to Santa Barbara with Defense Research Corporation in 1961, and later moved to work at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, as a professor in the engineering department in 1968. Harry's (his chosen American name) lifetime professional ambition was to be in academia where he could teach and pursue scientific research.
In his 30's, he met Teresa Shi-Bing Wang at a party in New York City. They fell in love and married in 1952 and moved to Queens. Within one year, they started a family with their son Harold Chiling Yang (1953), Franklin Yensen Yang (1954), and Peter Jagie Yang (1956). As a family they loved to travel in the summer, spend time with close friends, and enjoyed family dinners every evening. Being a kind, honest, hardworking father was of the utmost importance to Harry and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to unconditionally loving his family. Family always came first. Harry also took pride in setting an example in taking care of himself. He relentlessly exercised every day and maintained a healthy balanced diet. He once said, "I'm trapped in an old man's body but my mind is young."
In addition to his wife, Teresa, he is survived by his youngest sister in China, and his sons: Harold (spouse Carolyn) and children Teresa (spouse Ryan) and Patrick; Franklin and children Charlotte, Lucy, and Harrison; and Peter (spouse Therese) and children Gregory (spouse Lindsay and 2 children), Lisa (spouse Ryan), Michelle, and Jennifer (spouse Enrique).
The funeral service will be held at Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 10:30 AM. The service was recorded and be can be found at https://vimeo.com/500666658.
