NEVES, ARNOLD LEAL Arnold Leal Neves passed away peacefully at his home on January 25, 2013. Born in Santa Cruz - Ribeiras on the island of Pico, Azores on March 8, 1923, he was the youngest of three children born to Manuel and Etelvina Neves. In 1939, Arnold emigrated to Point Loma with his family and was a permanent resident until his passing. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific as a petty officer. He was a commercial tuna fisherman for 35 years on various boats and a partner with his brother Manuel in the MV Constitution. Arnold was a well-known figure in the community, especially through the Portuguese Hall and the various lodges and clubs. He was a regular at the yearly S.E.S. Festa and other Portuguese events. He loved his friends and family and all the great times they shared together. Throughout his life, Arnold and his wife Mary loved to travel to various parts of the world. Whether it was a cruise to Alaska or a summer trip back to their native Pico, Arnold and Mary were always viewing new sights. Arnold is survived by his wife Mary of 63 years, their four children Lucille Farrell, Rosemary Wierck, Arnold Neves Jr., Paul Neves, and their eight grandchildren. The Viewing on Thursday, January 31st, at Beardsley Mitchell Mortuary from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. A Rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass on Friday, February 1st, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Church. Celebration of life will be at the Portuguese Hall following the service at Holy Cross Cemetery.
