At the tender age of 16, Fidel's life was only beginning, he was taken far too soon. God called him home on the 8th day of January, 2021, at 7:29 p.m. Fidel passed away at Loma Linda University Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones and those who worked tirelessly to try and save him.
Fidel's family made the most selfless decision, by choosing to add Fidel into the Legacy of Life program. It was his family's hardest day. They chose to allow Fidel to give life and not die in vain. This courageous decision was also the most painful decision of his mother's life. She, along with the support of her family, consented to donate Fidel's organs in order to save the lives of other children and spare other family's the heart-break they themselves were enduring.
This heroic decision not only placed Fidel in the Legacy of Life program, it entitled her son to an Honor Walk, which is so deserving of this monumental moment. A child's Honor Walk is done when a family chooses to donate their son or daughters organs. The staff at LLUH showed their respect by standing in silence, lined side by side against the walls, down the halls, all the way to the operating room. Their silence said more than any words ever could. Fidel and his family deserved this tribute, as they endured an unimaginable loss.
Fidel will be most remembered by his desire to help anyone in need and his huge heart. He would give the shirt off his back if you needed it, and actually gave his own blanket, a favorite throughout his childhood, to a woman on the streets who was homeless and cold. He loved all or nothing; unconditionally. He loved to save money and loved to eat well. He will forever be missed and remembered daily with love.
