Dr. William English was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, coach, and friend. His life was characterized by warmth, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to family.
He graduated from TCU in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in communication and then went on to earn his doctorate degree from the University of Oklahoma. He began his professional career at the University of Houston where he was a college professor and debate coach for 14 years. He then taught and coached at Baylor University until he retired after 42 illustrious years. His dedication to academics and love of competition led to numerous achievements and honors including the National Debate Coach of the Year and Baylor’s William B. English Endowed Scholarship Fund in Communication. He was well respected and admired.
Dr. William English loved to travel, scuba dive, and spend time at his lake house. His greatest joy, however, was being with his wife, children, and grandchildren who knew him as “Big Daddy”. Family was truly at the center of his world. He is survived by Sandra English, his devoted wife of 62 years, his children Mark, Chris, and Jeff English, his two daughters-in-law Rebecca and Lisa, and his six grandchildren Nicholas, William, Nathan, Elizabeth, Thomas, and Drew. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Dr. William English's life will be held on Saturday, December 30th, 2023, at 2PM at the Sunset Funeral Home in San Antonio, TX. Friends and family are invited to join in commemorating the life of this remarkable individual. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a cause close to Dr. William English's heart www.jdrf.org or to a charity of your choice.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the support and condolences received during this difficult time. We give special thanks to the Visiting Angels of Georgetown (Doug Thorpe, Rose Meredith, Ingrid Frazer, and Angie Conde). William “Big Daddy” English's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his love and kindness.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
