Long time San Antonio resident, Virginia Ellis Hollifield Stegall, age 77, passed away peacefully on December 25th after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Virginia was born in Clovis, New Mexico and graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston and the University of Texas San Antonio with a BA degree in History. She was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church. Mrs. Stegall was born to the late Walter Wright and Imogene Hollifield and was the beloved wife of the late William Leroy Stegall.
She will be dearly missed by her children, Linda Mason and husband Paul Haspel of State College, Pennsylvania, Richard Mason of Mico, Geoffrey Mason and wife Rosalinda of San Antonio, and Michael Mason and wife Kelly of Dallas. Mrs. Stegall was blessed with and is survived by nine grandchildren (Amanda, Richie, Walter, Christopher, Holly, Luke, Matthew, and Ben Mason and Jennifer and Jason Yonker) and three great-grandchildren (Hailey, Nathan, and Brooke Yonker).
Mrs. Stegall was a member and leader of many church, historic, and civic organizations including the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, The Colonial Dames XVII Century, and Magna Carta Dames. She served as a Vice President General of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution 1997-2000 and the Texas Centennial State Regent 1994-1997. During her tenure as State Regent, Mrs. Stegall administrated a project in locating, documenting, photographing, and rededication of markers placed along the Old San Antonio Road, also known as the Kings Highway or Camino Real, in 1915. In her role has State Regent, Mrs. Stegall had many projects promoting literacy, including a scholarship endowment for teacher certification in learning disabilities at Southwest Texas State University.
Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel at 12:00 PM on Friday, December 31, 2010. Entombment will follow at Sunset Mausoleum. Donations in memory of Mrs. Stegall can be made to The Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center Baylor College of Medicine.
