Vidal Castillo, age 87, of San Antonio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2019. He was born March 28, 1932 in San Antonio, Texas to the late Vidal and Rosa (Cervera) Castillo. He attended Lanier High School. Before graduation, he signed up for the United States Air Force; before beginning boot camp, he would marry his high school sweetheart, Gloria Salas, in Seguin, Texas in April of 1951. His reserve unit was called up December of 1967 and he proudly served during the Vietnam conflict in the 34th Aero Med Evac Squadron. In 1985, he retired with 35 years of dedicated service with the United States Postal Service. Vidal was a proud card carrying member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
After his retirement, Vidal and Gloria spent their free time traveling the United States in their RV, making new friends and memories. They also enjoyed international travel visiting family and friends in Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Japan and Switzerland. Regardless of his travels, Vidal never forgot where he came from, he was proud of his Westside roots. Vidal and Gloria would raise their children, Orlando E. “Launi,” Gabriel and Rene, all in San Antonio.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria; infant daughter, Gloria Ann; and sister, Isabel “Chavela” Gonzales.
He is survived by his children and his siblings, Esequiel “Zeke” Castillo, Richard Castillo, Victor Castillo, Elia Cabello; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and close friends he considered family.
Family is receiving friends at the funeral home on Monday, April 22nd from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Recitation of The Holy Rosary will begin at 7:00 pm in the Chapel at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas 78232. Committal service with Military Honors will be conducted at 10:00 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at shelter number one at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209.
