Sylvia Jean Longoria Mendoza of San Antonio, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend went to be with the Lord on July 31, 2011 at the age of 51. Sylvia was born in St. Johns Michigan and was the youngest child born to Luciano and Fidelia Longoria on July 29, 1960. She was preceded in death by her father, Luciano, Sr. She is survived by her husband, Richard Mendoza, daughter Stephanie, and son, Joshua Mendoza of San Antonio. Mother, Fidelia Longoria of Pearsall; Sisters Mary Cantu (Frank) and Delly Starr (Dan) of San Antonio; Erma Aguilar (George) of Corpus Christi; Millie Gonzalez (the late Jimmy); Brothers Roy (Gloria) and Rudy Longoria (Rosa) of Pearsall; In laws, Daniel and Gloria Mendoza; Brother In Law, Hector Mendoza (Tammy) of Pearsall and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts & uncles. Sylvia had a large family and each person was very important to her. She was a very happy, loving, caring, and compassionate person that loved her family and friends. Sylvia grew up in Pearsall, TX where she graduated from Pearsall High School in 1979 and married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Richard. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from UTSA and her Masters in Education from Grand Canyon University. Education was her second career as she was an insurance underwriter for many years but her passion for teaching landed her at Steele Elementary, SAISD, for the last13 years. Sylvia battled with cancer for the past seven months and fought courageously for her life until the very end. The family would like to thank the staff at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital and all the family and friends that kept her in their prayers. Visitation will be at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home on Bandera Road on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with a rosary at 7:00 P.M. The funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 4, 2011 for an 11:00 A.M. mass at St. Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church, 6080 Roft Road with Rev. Arnold Ibarra officiating. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery at Cordi-Marian.
