Stella enjoyed her life as a wife, mother, and career woman. She retired as an insurance clerk from the Santa Rosa Hospital. As a member of “The Greatest Generation,” Stella lived through 9 decades, and many important times of our history, including The Great Depression and World War II. She and her family used their musical talents to play instruments and sing together. During the war, she supported her country, working with the Ration Board at Fort Sam Houston. On June 4, 1950, she married the love of her life, Willie Garcia, who had served in the Army during WWII. Together, they lived the American Dream, buying a house in a new subdivision of San Antonio, living near Kelly AFB where Willie worked until his retirement. Stella enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, and caring for her greatest joys, her grandchildren. She supported her husband with activities related to the VFW, DAV, and American Ex-POW organizations. She was very religious and prayed the rosary every day. She is preceded in death by her father, Thomas Rivas; mother, Virginia Castillo Rivas; sisters Annie Diaz and Luz Gutierrez; and brother Martin Rivas. She is survived by her husband, Willie Garcia; daughter Cynthia Louis Muniz; Rosa Linda Lomas (Johnny); William Garcia (Yvonne); and Kathryn Ortiz (Johnny); 10 grandchildren , Sandra, Aaron, Daniel and James Lomas, Roger Michael and Richard Muniz, Leslie and Justin Garcia and, Annalisa and Marcela Ortiz ; and 8 great-grandchildren, Jacqueline De La Rosa, Daniel Jeremy, Aaron Jacoby, Austin, Ariana and Bryson Lomas and Deandra and Nicholas Muniz. She is also survived by her sisters Nora Gamboa; Sister Helen Louise Rivas (Sisters of Devine Providence) and brother Harry Rivas (Rockville, MD). Stella Garcia will forever be remembered in our hearts for her beauty, wit, wisdom, and talents. Visitation will be at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home 6321 Bandera Road, on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with a rosary at 7:00 P.M
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the Little Flower Basilica Catholic Church, 824 Kentucky Rd. with interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
