Born in 1935 in Rock Island, Illinois, Shirley graduated from Incarnate Word University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Directly after finishing nursing school, Shirley married her college sweetheart, Dan. The began a family right away and soon were a family of 6. Other than a part time nursing position at the Golden Manor, Shirley stayed home with the children until they were all in school.
Shirley began her 49-year school nursing career with Northside Independent School District in 1972 at Thunderbird Hills Elementary. She became standing coordinator of school nursing in 1984 then director of health services in 1986. Shirley is the only director of health services NISD has ever had. Her dedication and passion for nursing were an inspiration to many.
Shirley is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
Visitation is at 6PM followed by a 7PM Rosary at St. Luke Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 30. Funeral Mass at 9:30am Wednesday, Oct 31 at St. Luke followed by 11AM burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
