SHEILA A. McCANN, US ARMY, RETIRED
MARCH 1, 1932 – MARCH 6, 2015
Lieutenant Colonel Sheila A. McCann, USA, Retired Army Nurse Corps, passed away peacefully at home in San Antonio on March 6, 2015 at the age of 83. She was born on March 1, 1932 in Chicago to the late Neal J. McCann, MD & Anne Golden McCann who preceded her in death along with her sisters, Margaret McCann and Claire McCann Lucas, MD, as well as her nephew, James Lucas. She grew up in Ishpeming and Marquette, MI and graduated in 1953 from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing and with a B.S. from Tulane University (LA) in 1965, after which she taught for 1 year at Touro Infirmary School of Nursing (LA). She was commissioned a Captain in the US Army Nurse Corps in August 1966. Her overseas assignments included tours in Vietnam, Japan, Germany and Panama where she focused on teaching Nursing Education & Training and Administration and as a Medical-Surgical Nurse and Chief Nurse for 20 years and 6 months until her retirement in March 1987 in San Antonio. Her numerous awards are: Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal with 1 bronze oak leaf cluster; Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral 2; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960) and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation. She was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Retired Army Nurse Corps Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War and Vietnam Veterans of America. She is an avid Spurs fan and is a proud member of Spurs Family. She is survived by a niece, Anne Lucas Sammartano of Cypress, CA, her nephews Michael Lucas of Encinitas, CA, Peter Lucas of Indian Wells, CA and five grandnephews: Bryant, Alex, Pierce, Finn and Charlie. The visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway. A Memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 19, at the funeral home, followed by graveside services at 1:30 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors.
