Robert L. Salas Sr., born on October 12, 1925 in San Antonio, Texas went to be with our Lord on August 5, 2023 at the age of 97. Robert attended Brackenridge High School. He served in the United States Naval Amphibious Forces during World War II and was stationed on the island of Samar in the Philippines.
While serving in the Navy he was awarded medals such as the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the American Campaign Medal. After his Naval Service he became a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars – Post 76.
Robert’s favorite hobby was supporting his favorite sports teams the Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Astros. Robert enjoyed watching and supporting his teams through everything.
In addition to being an accomplished sailor, he loved being with his family and visiting with all his grandchildren.
Robert is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret G. Salas; Ernest G. Salas (son); Vivian Murillo (daughter) ; Luis Garces, Jr. (grandson); Marcelino Salas and Catarina Lozano Salas (parents); Apolinar Salas, Roman Salas, Antonio Salas, Eduardo Salas (brothers); Josephina Rocha and Olivia Riojas (sisters).
He is survived by Robert Salas Jr. (Yolanda), David Salas Sr. (Diane), Daniel Salas Sr. (Viola), Janice Garces, Melissa Piña; 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to St. Francis Nursing Home staff for their kind, gentle, and loving way of making him feel happy during his stay at the nursing home.
A Visitation will be held Monday, August 14, 2023 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with The Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Road, San Antonio, Texas 78237. On Tuesday, August 15, 2023 Funeral Home doors will open at 8:00 a.m. and we will then go into a procession for a 9:45 a.m. Mass at St. James Catholic Church, 907 West Theo Ave., San Antonio, Texas 78225, followed by burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209.
