Sonny Payne was born on February 2, 1929 in San Antonio, Texas to parent’s Robert W Payne and Mary Esther Payne.
Sonny served in the Army during the Korean War and after being honorably discharged he served in the Navy Reserves. As a young man he attended Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas; after high school he attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Sonny built a successful construction business, but his true passion in life was ranching and raising his three sons.
Sonny was preceded in death by his sister Geraldine Dunklin. He was survived by his wife of 55 years, LaRue Payne; son, Robert Wade Payne III, wife Ileana and daughters, Elise and Catherine; son, John Payne, wife, DeAnne and children, JP, Parker, and Ava; son, Richard Payne, wife Darlene and son, Gavin; his niece, Sandra Glomski; and his nephew, Jeff Dunklin. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wounded Warriors Foundation.
