Richard served in the Army/Air Corp. from 1945 - 1947, drafted at age 18. He was a mechanic at Stakke Garage until 1952. He was then employed by the San Antonio Transit Co. (later renamed VIA Metropolitan Transit) from 1952 to 1982. Initially hired as a painter, he became foreman of the paint shop. He joined the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local Chapter 694, and became a lifetime member after 50 years of continuous membership. After retirement from the transit company, he started his own top-soil delivery business. As a past-time, he loved doing yard work and maintenance of his house and vehicles.
A member of Huisache Ave. Baptist Church, he gave his life to Christ on May 6, 1962. He served faithfully there for several years as a church bus driver and Sunday School Superintendent. He often reflected that those were the "happiest days" of his life.
