Richard was the most honorable man I worked for in my 40+ years as an accountant.  I was hired into the Texas Council after it had been taken over by the UBC.  I had no idea who my boss would be and the Council was in disarray.  When Richard came 3 weeks later his leadership qualities made the situation easier almost immediately.   He earned the respect of everyone as he handled each situation in his calm and direct manner.  He was no nonsense - I appreciated that because that's how my Dad was.  Early on we realized what an exceptional leader he was.  He was brave and had the courage of his convictions.   He knew what needed to be done and he stayed steady and true to that mission. No one was treated as if they were less than another, from the Business Reps he worked with daily and the members working on their tools to the secretaries in the offices – Richard cared about every one of them.  He was a teacher – there was so much to learn from him for those who were willing to pay attention.  I remember being angry at how some of the local union secretaries were treated – he told me that it was the secretary in the local who knew what was going on and could handle what came up and he couldn’t understand why they were not recognized for that.  He never wavered no matter what the opposition to him was.  I had never worked in a Union setting before and there were times I didn’t agree with something but the truth is eventually I saw the reasons behind his decisions.   He always worked to do what was best for all his people.  There were times Richard had to make difficult choices and no one saw how hard that was on him.  
I so admired his love for his family.  When he would talk about them it was obvious how much they meant to him and how he missed them.  Laura was everything to him and I was so blessed to become friends with both of them.
