Philip was born in Kirton in Lindsey, England to Clarence Donald Johnson, an American Army soldier, and Joan Spindley-Johnson, an English nanny on October 27, 1945.
After the War, at the age of 2, Philip and his mother sailed to America to join his father, Don, in Turnersville, Texas where they farmed. Later, the growing family moved to Temple, Texas where Phil attended school. At the age of 17, his family relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas where he finished high school at W.B. Ray High School in 1964. On a chance blind date, he met the love of his life, Stephanie Stewart. They were married on August 6, 1966. Phil graduated as a Draftsman from Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, and began work for Lockwood, Andrews, and Newnam (LAN) Engineering firm. Phil and Stephanie had two children, Jason Stewart Johnson, and Jodie Lynn Johnson-Sittre.
In 1984, LAN transferred Phil to San Antonio, where he would live out his life. He retired from LAN as a project manager after 42 years.
He and Stephanie enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson motorcycles across the country with good friends, calling themselves the Mild Bunch. He and Stephanie enjoyed spending time with best friends, Mark and Stella Hichens.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife. Phil is survived by his son, Jason Johnson, and granddaughter, Kristen Nicole Johnson, and his daughter, Jodie Lynn Johnson-Sittre, husband Karl Sittre, and granddaughters, Lauren Rae Sittre and Kelsey Lynn Sittre. Phil is survived by sister, Diana Golding (Richard), sister Linda McDonald (Johnny), brother Robert Johnson (Cindy), brother George Johnson (Priscilla), brother James Johnson (Lisa), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Philip was a kind, compassionate, loving husband, father, brother, and friend. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, TX 78238. A meal reception will follow at the Johnson home. The address will be available at the service.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to caregivers, Lisa Janes and Wendy Stanley, as well as the entire staff of Avalon Memory Care Center.
