Paul Douglas Graf, age 82, passed away on January 23, 2020. He was born in Damascus, Ohio on October 30, 1937 to Martin and Dorothy Graf. He grew up on a country farm in Grand Rapids, Ohio where he lived and worked for 25 years.
When he was inducted into the U.S. Army, he served as a Medic at BAMC, Korea and Vietnam and later as an Environmental Health Specialist. While working at BAMC he met the love of his life: Edith Jasper. She came into the ER unconscious where he was working. When he saw her, he said “Boy, she’s a pretty woman!” never dreaming they would one day marry. His best friend, Pete Hendershot, lived next door to Edith and played matchmaker. She cooked a fine meal for him before he left to see his parents before deployed. He didn’t show up! When he was almost to his parents in Ohio, he fell asleep at the wheel and was seriously injured. He woke up to see his parents looking down at him. Edith also came to see him. On October 31, 1963 they were married in Wright-Patterson Air Force Hospital. He was in a full body cast! Later they made their home in San Antonio.
After 20 years of military service and he retired as a disabled vet. But, he loved to work and hired on with San Antonio Water System where he worked for 21 years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and took his boys with him often.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; Edith J. Graf, his wife of 42 years and his son, Roland Jasper. He is survived by sons: John Jasper and wife Violet, Charles Jasper, David Graf and wife Joyce, Douglas Graf; and grandchildren Jennifer Jasper and Bradley Graf; as well as a host of friends from the Northeast Senior Center. Paul dearly loved his wife and often said: “I want to be with my wife in heaven.”
Visitation is scheduled at 6:00 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2020 at Sunset Funeral Home. The funeral will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. Rev. Bill Shockley will officiate. On Tuesday, February 4, internment with military honors will be held at 10:30 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Friends are asked to arrive at Shelter # 3 at 10:00.
