Mitch was born on Oct. 10, 1953 to Bill and Berneice Williams of Des Moines, Iowa. Mitch was a lifelong East-sider and graduated from East High School in 1972. His love of automobiles and motorcycles began early when he started working at Bill Haltom’s Motor and Marine at 14 years of age. After high school, he worked for Armstrong Tire and Rubber before starting a long career as a pipeline welder for MidAmerican Energy. Mitch loved being a welder and was proud of the work that he accomplished.
In 1966, he met Cindy Graham, when they were both 13 years old ice-skating on Birdland Lagoon. It was love at first sight and they wed in 1974. The couple had one daughter Hannah, who was Mitch’s greatest pride and joy. Shortly before his death, Mitch and Cindy celebrated 48 years of marriage. Mitch and Cindy had a love story for the ages and were soulmates.
Mitch loved motorcycles and racing. Most days, you could find him in the garage working on his motorcycles in preparation for the next hare scrambles. When he was not riding, he enjoyed attending all levels of motocross racing. Mitch could fix anything and was never one to sit still for long. He loved to swim and comb the beach for seashells. Mitch loved music and spent many hours listening to his collection of vinyl albums.
Mitch never met a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and become fast friends, even if he couldn’t remember their name - they always remembered him. He had many lifelong friendships that dated back to his teenage years.
His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, and in retirement he moved to San Antonio, Texas to be closer to his daughter and her family. He was unendingly proud of Grace, his granddaughter. With Grace, he spent many hours swimming in the pool, eating ice cream, and watching her dance, even joining in living room dance parties.
Mitch was a loving father and devoted husband. While he faced many struggles, he never stopped fighting to be the husband and father that his family cherished. Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Berneice Williams, and his in-laws Bob and Marge Graham, who loved him like one of their own. Mitch is survived by his wife Cindy, daughter Hannah (Brian) Steward, granddaughter Grace Steward, sister Nancy (Mike) Callahan, brother Randy (Jackie) Williams, sister-in-law Pam (Bill) Thompson, and brother-in-law Bobby (Patti) Graham. He is also survived by numerous cousins and nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Mitch.
A memorial service will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 3303 Urban Crest Drive in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 11:00 am. There will be a celebration of life to follow this summer in Des Moines, Iowa.
