Teodora Mercedes Garcia, age 75, passed away on May 26, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was born in Ciudad de Mexico D.F. on September 9, 1942 and loved dearly by her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her grandfather Augustine Garcia, her parents Socorro and Hermalinda, her sister Amalia, Rudy Garcia, grandson Marty Garcia, and great grandson Andres Garcia.
One of the many scriptures underlined in her Bible was Genesis 1:12 “And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.” Mrs. Garcia had a green thumb. She loved to garden and care for her plants and trees, watching the seeds that she planted produce fruit. She often planted clippings from other plants and turned barren places beautiful.
She loved to cook and care of her family. If you sat at her table, you were treated like family regardless of relation. No one could top her carne guisada, enchiladas, tamales, entomatadas, beans, caldo de res, caldo de pollo, or tortillas. Many times, she would gather her family around the dinner table and cook for them while discussing life and faith. Mrs. Garcia was woman of faith. She loved God and held to His Word. One of her favorite scriptures was Joshua 1:6 “Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.” From the time of her marriage, she supported the work of God. From the small work under a tree in Mission, Texas, to a daughter work in San Antonio, Texas, she loved working to build the Kingdom of God.
She raised her right hand in one of the last acts before she passed from this life and said, “El me da paz.” (He gives me peace.) She would have us believe today that she is at peace, and her wish would be for us to experience the same peace in Jesus Christ.
Left to honor and remember her love and strength are her husband Rodolfo Garcia, her sister Mariana, her children, Juan (Olga) Avila Garcia, Rosa (Guillermo) Arechiga, Gerardo (Juanita) Avila Garcia, Laura (Marcial) Gonzalez, Roberto (Teresa) Avila Garcia, Rebeca (Brandon) Cox, Elia (Rodney) Blue, Roland (Barbara) Garcia; 29 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and many friends who loved her.
Viewing for Mrs. Garcia will be held on Thursday May 31, 2018 from 5:00-8:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home located at 6321 Bandera Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78238. Funeral Services will be held on June 1, 2018 at 11:00am at CrossingPoint Church, 7935 Mainland, San Antonio, Texas, 78250.
