Melody attended law school at the University of Miami from 1996 through 1997 – but put her dreams on hold to return home and support her family during a difficult time. She returned to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1998 and completed her master’s degree in Sociology in May 2000 with a 3.54 GPA.
On March 24, 2001, at 3:30pm she married Joseph Osborn Toomer Jr. in Charlotte, NC. Together, they were blessed with five children: Joseph Osborn Toomer, Jr. III, Joshua Chayton Amir Toomer, Justin Curtis Ojore Toomer, Jaiden Jovanni Naji Asad Toomer, and Jordynn Aaliyah Ariel Noelani Toomer.
Melody never gave up on her dream to become an attorney. She attended Abraham Lincoln University & Online Law School and graduated on February 7th, 2017, earning her Juris Doctorate degree while raising 4 children.
Melody was a devoted Mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. She loved music and dancing. She loved cooking and baking cakes, cookies and pies from scratch. Melody loved traveling, singing, and most importantly – spending time with the people she loved and cared for.
Melody passed away after a seven-month battle with antiphospholipid syndrome on July 11, 2021, at North Central Baptist hospital in San Antonio, TX. She leaves us to join Sydney, Anita and Joseph Jr. III in heaven. Here on earth, Melody’s memories will live on in the hearts of her husband of 20 years, Joseph, her dear children, Joshua, Justin, Jaiden and Jordynn and her beloved brother Joao Pierre (JP) Ruth. Melody also leaves behind her dearest friend, Consuela Spencer, her closest cousin Danielle Garvin, her dear aunts, Pat and Anna, her dear uncles, Bernard and Sam, and a host of other cousins in the Ruth, Hester, Royster, Garvin and Laurel families. Melody will also be mourned by her dear friends – who she loved like family – here in San Antonio and around the world.
