Maria N. Reyes, born December 19, 1931; earned her wings on August 27, 2020, at the age of 88. She was born to Jose Fonguin and Francisca Nunez in the San Antonio area. Maria grew up one of six children. Maria met the love of her life in Pedro Reyes: they established a family of 12 children. Maria was most proud of her children, along with her savory tortillas. She was very proud that the children she raised did not succumb to drug use, nor became parents out of wedlock in their teen years: She was well aware of the typical stereotypes often prevalent in the poor neighborhoods of San Antonio. The food on our table was minimal but she always said that none of her children ever went hungry. She showed us her love through her cooking. Maria was well known for her tortillas, particularly. For years she worked the Maria’s Tortillas booth at NIOSA. She also made her homemade tortillas for former First Lady Barbara Bush and the first ladies of other countries for whom the gathering honored. The highlight of that evening for her was meeting each and every one of those first ladies. I’m certain that the highlight of that evening for those first ladies was eating Maria’s tortillas!
Maria is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her spouse, and a son-in-law. Maria is survived by her children Hector L. Zertuche (Linda), Maria De La Garza (Arturo), Yolanda Lopez (Oscar), Rose Garza (Ram), Janie Nava, Pete Reyes (Irma), Carlos G. Reyes (Diana), Martina Mendez (Ernesto), Albert Reyes (Lisset), Sandra Velazquez (Israel), Jerry Reyes (Sylvia), and Paula Hilario (Jose). She is also survived by 30 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren.
Due to restrictions on public gatherings, the Visitation at Funeraria del Angel Trevino – 2525 Palo Alto Road San Antonio Texas 78211- will be limited to only 50 people in the building. Face coverings are required to be worn at all times.
