Querida Maria de la Luz,
You earned your name in this lifetime. No one could deny the light of your presence. You were not one to shine brightly or seek attention. Instead, your light was like the quiet flame of a candle that burns in the corner of a room, providing prayers, solace, a steady comfort. Yours was the light of the moon at its most graceful face – the soft cheek of mother, the reassurance that you will find your way back home.
You gave light eleven times and nurtured ten beautiful beings into adulthood. Your own light dimmed when three of your daughters left this lifetime before you did. Our only comfort in this time of grief is knowing that you have finally reunited with them and with Grandpa Modesto, who built this strong family by your side for 46 years.
You selflessly cared for so many of your grandchildren and great grandchildren, with the light of your kitchen fire burning as tirelessly as your love for us. You always made sure we were well fed, comfortable, and clean. As kids we dreamed that you would open a restaurant so that everyone could taste your delicious food. But maybe it was your warm light that we wished everyone could experience. Because in your kitchen and in your yard, we all felt welcomed, loved, safe, and at peace.
What a world this would be if we could all display such grace, patience, forgiveness, and non judgment. Maybe that’s why all the flowers bloomed for you! Why you could grow any plant or bring the sick ones back to life with your touch. Even birds and animals flocked to you and found comfort in your presence.
This light of yours was felt not just at home, but on the many travels we got to experience with you. In your 95 years you were able to explore many parts of Mexico, the Middle East, Spain, China, and so much of this country, including the Grand Canyon and your birthplace in Nebraska. Along the way, you pocketed seeds and plant clippings, ignoring rules against this, trusting that these little lives would be okay in your care. We shared these adventures with you just as we did gifts and flowers, meals and mariachi music – as some small gesture to repay the astounding love you showed us all, but knowing full well that a love like yours could never be repaid.
As the plants who grew under your nurturing light, the best we can do for the remainder of our own lifetimes is to model your character. To share a light that is as soft as your skin and a love as delicious as your meals.
From your adoring family who is already missing you on this earth, we send you three kisses…
