María Luisa De Los Santos passed away quietly in the arms of her loving daughter Serafina. María Luisa was born in Brownsville, Texas on July 29, 1940 to the late Prajedes and Serafina (Ramirez) De Los Santos both of Brownsville, Texas. In 1947, at the young age of seven years, María Luisa lost her mother and it was left to her father Prajedes, his sisters Irene and Ursula to raise her and her five brothers. It was then she developed her tough resilient nature and independent spirit. María Luisa moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in the 1990s where she would live until 2010 when she moved to San Antonio, Texas to be closer to her daughter.
María Luisa loved her family unconditionally, a protector, with the heart of a lioness. A force of nature, she was always happy and a free spirit beloved by all who knew her. She was known as Bebita to her brothers and Tia, beloved aunt, to all her nieces and nephews. María Luisa loved the beach, to talk on the phone, to cook and to eat. Although she chose not to continue her education, she was educated in the school of life. She was street smart and wholly independent. María Luisa was always willing to help others less fortunate and navigated through the red tape and bureaucracy to get resources for them. Most notably, María Luisa became a single parent in 1959 at the age of 18. Against all odds, she overcame the stigma of single parenthood. She held her head high and sacrificed to ensure her daughter received the best education. She provided unwavering emotional and moral support to her daughter telling her, “de mejores lugares nos an corrido.” She provided the same encouragement to all her family members and friends. Our family has lost our biggest cheerleader and gained a Guardian Angel.
She was preceded in death by her Father, Prajedes, Mother Serafina, brothers Richard (Tillie), and Robert (Santa). She is survived by her daughter Serafina (Rosi), brothers Prajedes “Pete” (Gert), Guillermo “Willie” (Ana), Miguel “Mike” (Diana) and several nieces and nephews. She will return to Brownsville, Texas for interment at Buena Vista Cemetery, next to her Father Prajedes.
