Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph J. and Margaret Conrad; his son, Jody Conrad; his daughter-in-law, Pamela Conrad; his sisters, Patsy Schmahlenberger and Mary Owens; his sister-in-law, Peggy Conrad, and brothers-in-law, Dave Owens and Bill Schmahlenberger. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bettie Conrad; his children, Candy Elliott and her husband, Neil, Cynthia C. Butler and her husband, Rob; his grandchildren, Cory, Andrew, Stephen, Madeline, Isabella, and William; his great grandchild, Jade Elyse; his sibling, Terry Conrad; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe was best remembered for his golf career with many, many titles, most notably the 1955 British Amateur Championship. He was a member of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. He introduced golf to many, young and old, at the 19th Hole Golf Center on San Pedro. He continued to be a steadfast and generous presence in the San Antonio golf community even after his days at the driving range.
Golf was his career and passion, but his family was his love. He was not only a great father, but an incredible Papa to his 6 grandchildren. He loved being with them and mom's wheelchair did not stop them from joining in all their activities. For the past 18 years, Joe was devoted to Bettie's care and watching that love between the two of them was an inspiration. He definitely left this world a better place - with his love of life and generous spirit. He will be missed.
