John Clifton Smith, Sr., age 72, passed away September 11, 2013. He was born on December 26, 1940 in San Antonio, TX to Clifton Jerry Smith & Clara Mae Yarbough. He graduated from Burbank High School in 1959. He retired from the U. S. Coast Guard as Master Chief Yoeman after 25 years of service. Professionally he worked for the local FBI while continuing to serve as a USCG Reservist. John acted as manager of Checker Cab Company, eventually retiring from the transportation industry after nearly 30 years. He was a classic car enthusiast, restoring several Ford Mustangs and Thunderbirds. He enjoyed his retirement by caring for his home, gardening and getting together with friends. He especially cherished spending time in the pool with his grandkids. He was an honest, dependable and caring man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ernie Smith.
He is survived by his 3 children, Andrea Salter, Heather Knell & husband Doug and John Smith, Jr.; 4 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ed Smith & Floyd Smith.
Visitation will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with the Funeral Service to be at 12 noon.
Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
