It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John “Toby” Petty, an extraordinary man whose life was a testament to love, selflessness, and generosity. He departed from this world on July 3, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his family and all who were fortunate to know him.
Toby was a devoted husband, a loving father, a doting grandfather and great-grandfather, and a beloved brother. His life was a shining example of what it means to give unselfishly and to love unconditionally. He touched the lives of many with his boundless kindness and unwavering support, never asking for anything in return.
As a husband, Toby was a dedicated partner to his beloved spouse, Mary Virginia, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and companionship. Their bond, built over 46 beautiful years together, was a testament to their commitment and devotion to each other. Mary Virginia, your strength, love, and unwavering support were Toby’s greatest treasures. Together, you built a life filled with precious memories, laughter, and an unbreakable bond that will continue to inspire us all.
As a father, Toby nurtured his children with patience, wisdom, and a deep, abiding love. He instilled in them the values of integrity, hard work, and compassion, guiding them to become the individuals they are today. His legacy lives on through them and the many lives they touch.
As a grandfather and great-grandfather, Toby filled the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with joy and inspiration, not to mention unlimited candy. His stories, laughter, and gentle guidance created precious memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
As a brother, Toby was a pillar of strength and camaraderie. His siblings cherished his presence and knew they could always count on him for support and love.
"Your legacy is every life you touch." Toby's life was a testament to this principle, touching countless hearts with generosity and love. He exemplified God's purpose for special individuals on earth to make a difference. Through his actions, he profoundly impacted lives, leaving behind a legacy of compassion that will continue to inspire and guide us. Though he has left us, his spirit and his legacy of kindness will forever resonate in our hearts, reminding us of the enduring power of love and grace. As Matthew 5:16 reminds us, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
He is survived by his loving spouse, Mary Virginia; his children, Andy, Taylor, Recie, Ray; his grandchildren, Alyssa, Abigail, Andrew, Julia, Sage, Jessica, Recie IV, Michael Ray, Eddie, Jacob, Matthew, Brandon and great-grandchildren, Kinsleigh, Preston, Jaxon, Jacob Jr., Lorenzo, Robert, David, Olivia; his brother, Neal Petty; and numerous extended family members.
A memorial service to celebrate Toby’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 24th, 9:00am-11:00am at Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy., San Antonio, TX 78218. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home in honor of Toby.
Rest in peace, Toby. May you find tranquility by the calm shores of your favorite beach and the majestic mountain peaks of the beloved Pinnacle, looking down on us with your big smile. Your life was a gift to us all, and your legacy of love and kindness will live on in each and every one of us. Thank you for everything you gave, and for everything you were.
