He is preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 41 years: Manok Y. Kurten; siblings: Rudolph G. Kurten, Jr., David Lee Kurten, Curtis Leon Kurten, Ronald Gene Kurten, Gussie Marie Sechelski, Madeline Louise Permenter and Lilybell (Cookie) Kurten.
He is survived by his daughter: Madeline Kurten and husband Michael Lopez; 2 grandchildren: Eva Lopez, Alexis Kurten Monsibaiz (Edward); sister: Maude Pauline Ubnoski of Plantersville, TX; brothers: Daniel Kurten of Navasota, Billy Joe Kurten of Magnolia and William Edward Kurten of Plantersville.
Growing up on the family farm in Plantersville, John learned the value of hard work and dedication. At the young age of 19, he joined the Army after graduating from Magnolia High School in 1952. During his dedicated years of military service, he earned an extensive list of achievements. John served three tours in the Far East as a personnel specialist or a personnel management supervisor in the Republic of Vietnam in 1957; in Okinawa in 1960-61 and in Korea in 1965-1966. Throughout his military career, he traveled the world and made life-long friends. After serving his country, he spent his retirement years fishing, enjoying family and spending evenings visiting with neighbors around his firepit. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home with a private family burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
