John V. Alvarado, Lt Col. USAR (Ret), beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, entered into rest on December 23, 2012 at the age of 91. A native of San Antonio, he was born on February 8, 1921 to Jesus and Margarita Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a First Class Electronics Technician and took part in the Okinawa invasion. After the war he joined the Naval Reserves and in 1956, received a direct commission as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves and served as the 90th Signal Cops Battalion Commander. He retired in 1974 attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. John received an Associate of Arts from San Antonio College, attended The University of Texas at Austin, the Air Command and Staff College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the General Staff and Signal Corps School and the Civil Affairs School. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, the Society of American Military Engineers, and the VFW Post 8134 in La Coste, TX. He was a retired Electronics Engineer, President of GAMCO Masonry Corporation, a panel member of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, Camino Real Health Services, and served on the San Antonio Zoning Commission. John was also President of the Atascosa Rural Water Supply and in his youth was a proud member of the Prospect Hill Triangles Athletic Club, a group that continued to meet until later in life. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Amalia C. Alvarado. He is survived by children: Richard C. Alvarado, Rodolfo H. Alvarado and wife, Elvira, Marina Teresa Zamora and husband Raul, John R. Alvarado and wife Melody; grandchildren: Georgia O’Flaherty, Carolyn Alvarado, Margaret Brieno, Randy Zamora, Laura Leonard, Chris Alvarado, Marc Alvarado, Justin Alvarado; great –grandchildren: Nicolas, Emily, Sarah, Sean, and one on the way. The family will receive friends at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. A funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, January 3, 2013 to celebrate a 9:00 a.m. Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church.
