It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry Avalos, who left us on February 11, 2025, at the age of 62. Born in San Antonio, TX, on September 15, 1962, Jerry was a compassionate, caring, and joyful soul whose presence made an everlasting impact on all who knew him.
Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind his loving wife, Sandra Ortiz, and his cherished children: Connie Marie Avalos, Kristin Forrester, Meghan Castillo (Shawn), and Sean Reese. He was also a proud grandfather to his beloved granddaughters, Kayme Rivera and Evelyn Castillo. Jerry is preceded in death by his mother, Concepcion “Connie” Avalos.
Known for his humility, determination, and giving nature, Jerry was always willing to go out of his way to help others. His loyalty as a friend was unwavering, and he consistently supported those around him. His actions and kindness touched countless lives, and his memory lives on through the people he helped and the lasting friendships he built.
Jerry was a proud graduate of Thomas Edison High School, where he later became a founding member of the Golden Bear Alumni Association. As an alumni member, he worked tirelessly to raise funds for scholarships and organized numerous fundraisers. Jerry was deeply involved in many of the school’s events, where he supported the football team and other athletic activities. His contributions to the school and community have left an indelible mark.
He worked for VIA Metropolitan Transit, where he was a proud union member and a dedicated employee. Throughout his career, Jerry was known for his hardworking nature and for always putting others first. His coworkers affectionately called him "Chief" due to his infectious sense of humor and the respect he earned from everyone around him.
Jerry’s legacy is one of kindness, compassion, and commitment to his family, friends, and community. Jerry will be deeply missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him, and as Jerry would say, “GO BEARS!!!”.
Family will receive guests from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a rosary on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary - McCullough, 1101 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212. A funeral service will occur Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 1710 Clower, San Antonio, TX 78201.
