Jean Mary Abel, born December 25, 1929, in Burnley, Lancashire, England to Harry and Dorothy Davies Layfield, entered rest on Friday March 2, 2012 at the age of 82. After surviving the bombings of London during WWII, she came to California to fulfill her dreams. She was sponsored by her Aunt Peggy and Uncle Fred Morgan. She soon became a restaurant manager where she met her husband, Earl Abel, Jr. She and her family moved to San Antonio when her husband went to work at the family business, Earl Abel’s Restaurant. She was an active member of the San Antonio Restaurant Association Women’s Auxiliary where she was past president from 1969-1970. She was a member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church for 43 years. She helped co-write the Earl Abel-Wayne Harper song “San Antonio”. She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Earl Abel, Jr. and 3 of her brothers. She is survived by son, Robert Abel and wife Emma; son, Garry Abel and wife Mindy; granddaughters, Brittany and Brooke Abel; 3 step-grandsons and numerous other family members and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 1:00pm at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, 2738 MacArthur View, San Antonio, TX 78217. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew’s UMC Memorial Fund, in memory of Jean Abel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
